Abstract

Background: Wet cough is caused hypersecretion of mucus, mucus found in the lower respiratory tract (windpipe and lungs). To mucus expenditure is used mucolytic drugs that has several side effects, therefore another alternative from resources is needed to treat this problem. Lantana camara L is one of herbal plants which has potential in mucolytic activity. Objective: The aim of this experimental method is to identify secondary metabolite compounds in Lantana camara L leaf n-hexane fraction and second to examine the activity of mucolytic activity of Lantana camara L leaf n-hexane fraction by in vitro method. Method: Measurement of viscosity is method used in this research. Lantana camara leaf powders extracted maceration for 24 hours four times. Then, metabolite was identified with thin layer chromatography methods and mucolytic activity was tested on mucus intestine by in vitro. The Lantana camara leaf n-hexane fraction used the concentrations of 0,1%, 0,5%, and 1,0%. Negative controls using mucus solution 20% w/w phosphate buffer pH 7 and positive control is acetylcysteine 0,1%. The solution was incubated at 37 ° C for 30 minutes before the viscosity measurement. Solution test, negative control and positive control measured viscosity with a viscometer ostwald. Results and Conclusions: The result showed that Lantana camara leaf n-hexane fraction contains flavonoids and steroids/triterpernoids. The result of mucolytic activitiy in 0,1 %, 0,5% and 1,0 % of Lantana camara n-hexane fraction was not significant with positive control (Acetylcysteine 0,1%). So, Lantana camara leaf n-hexane fraction hasn’t activities as mucolytic.
