Abstract

Background: Acne is a disease that reduces the confidence of sufferers which is caused by bacteria Propionibacterium acnes. Sumbawa horse milk has the best antimicrobial activity due to the galactoferin compounds the milk has. Objective: This research aimed to determine the effect of horse milk with concentration at 15%, 20%, and 25% in 1% carbomer gelling agent toward the physical characteristics of the gel preparation, and to determine the antibacterial activity against Propionibacterium acnes. Method: The method applied in this research was the experimental to compare 3 formulas with different horse milk concentration. Then researcher analyzes the physical and chemical characteristics and antibacterial activity. Results and Conclusions: All formulas have the same characteristics, which were thick white, soft texture, and typical horse milk scent. The viscosity of all formulas is 12700cPs ± 2861.82, 11000cPs ± 9050.41, and 9066cPs ± 9625.66. The results of the spreadability are 0.014 g /cm, 0.017 g /cm, and 0.034 g /cm. The pH results for all formulas are 5.55, 6.24, and 6.46. The results of the antibacterial activity test of horse milk gel do not have antibacterial activity against the Propionibacterium acnes bacteria which is indicated by the absence of inhibition zones around the wells.
