Abstract
Film is a mass communication that many people use to provide entertainment in their spare time. Film is a series of audio and visual components that function as a messenger. Movies can also be called a living picture. Films make messages easier to convey and understand. The message has an important role in a film, therefore conveying a message is an important task for filmmakers. The message conveyed in a film can be influential, or cause an effect with a specific purpose. No exception, Bill Condon's Beauty and the Beast film is a musical fantasy film. The film tells the story of the prince of a French kingdom who was cursed by a witch because the witch did not like the attitude of a cold-hearted prince, did not want to help her. Not only was the prince cursed, even the servants of the kingdom were condemned to be household furniture because of the prince's attitude. From the above problems, the researchers formulated the problem, which is the theme of the love messages that appeared in the film Beauty and the Beast Understanding of love according to Peterson (2004: 29) is a close relationship with other people, especially sharing and caring to get closer to others. In its most developed form, love occurs in reciprocal relationships with others. This study uses quantitative descriptive content analysis using 5 (five) categorizations, namely: Brotherhood Love, Parental Love, Erotic Love, Self Love, and God's Love. The unit of analysis in this study is the overall scene found in the Beauty and the Beast scene to determine the frequency of the appearance of the message theme in each categorization contained in the film. Whereas in the technical analysis the data is carried out with coding assisted by two coders. The results of the coding are then calculated and tested for reliability using the Holsti formula and reliability test with the Scott Pi formula. Based on the results of the research that has been done, the results obtained for the emergence of the theme of the love message in the film Beauty and the Beast has 46 scenes (63.01%) of the total 73 scenes. The emergence of the most dominant theme of love messages is 31 scenes of brotherly love with a percentage of 42.41% of the total 73 scenes in the film Beauty and the Beast. In the category of love fraternity with the empathy (A4) and trust (A6) sub categories, the most dominant sub-categories emerged, namely 9 scenes with a percentage of 12.32% of the total 73 scenes in the film Beauty and the Beast. By looking at the results of these categories, the depiction of the love message in Beauty and the Beast shows that the film shows love through giving empathy and trust in practice.
