Abstract

Culture Barrier is one of the cultural differences that refers to difficulty in communication occuring when people of other cultures interact. People who comes to the new country and enter a new cultural environment with whatever reasons they have, they attempt to communicate or interact with local people and they negotiate their ideas in several ways. They might face experience culture barrier. They will face some difficulties on pshychological feeling and physical distress. These might be caused by cultural variation that exist in every country in the world. As what many experts say that entering a new culture for a prolong of time is not as easy as they expected. In line with this background, this research was aimed at analyzing and describing of what the culture barrier, the causes, and its solutions that experienced by Learning Express Program Meanwhile, this research used descriptive qualitative research design in which the instrument used was interview. The data collected by interviewing the research subjects, two students from English Language Education Departement of University of Muhammadiyah Malang who are joining the Learning Express Program in Singapore Polytechnic. Besides, the researcher employed the semi-structured interview since the researcher could prepare questions for the research subject, and the researcher could modify the questions within the interview process. While, in analyzing the data, the researcher used five flows of activities: organizing the data, preparing the data, coding the data, representing the findings in table, and interpreting the findings. Having discussed and analyzed the data, it was found that: 1) The research subjects experienced culture barrier through the aspects such as language differences, level of context, value of time, and feelings and emotions; 2) The factors affecting the research subjects in experiencing culture barrier were as follows: custom, behavior, language, personality, and host culture attitude; 3) Based on the result of this research, the research subjects overcome their culture barrier problems by learning and adjust the custom, changing their habit, and having communication and interaction with the local people frequently.
