Abstract

Speaking is the ability to express ideas, fellings and emotions in oral communication. To practice speaking is a central part of English lessons in universities today. However, to make students speak English is not always easy and there can be several different reasons why this is the case. The current study analyze the topic namely speaking anxiety and its influence in speaking performance in the second year students’ in English Language Education Department at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. This study aimed at analyzing the level and factor of speaking anxiety at ELED student. To achieve the purposes of this study, the writerused mix methode design qualitative and quantitative. Further, 75 ELED student’s were selected based on their experience in four level of speaking course. Therefore, Foreign language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) orspeaking questionnaire was used to analyzed the level of anxiety, while semi-structure interview was used to know the factors that caused anxiety. The results showed that the students were in medium level of anxiety. They were in that condition as their FLCASmean score was 113.The writerfound six major factors that causing anxiety. They were1) Personal and interpersonal anxieties; 2) Students’ beliefs about language learning; 3) Instructors’ beliefs about language teaching; 4) Instructor-Learner interaction; 5) Classroom tasks, and 6) Language testing. Hence, despite those factors were causing the anxiety, Instructors’ beliefs about language teaching andInstructor-Learner interactionwere mark as the most provoking that causing anxiety in which fear of negative evaluation.
