Abstract

The researcher of this study is interested in reading the short story and analyzing as well to show the readers about the greediness that portrayed by Pakhom. The aims of this research are (1) to describe how Pakhom’s greediness (2) to identify the causes of Pakhom’s greediness, and (3) to identify the effects of Pakhom’s greediness in the “How Much Land Does a Man Need?” short story by Leo Tolstoy. This research is categorized as descriptive qualitative research design by collecting and analyzing the data and related theories. The object of this research is “How Much Land Does a Man Need?” short story. Besides, this research used objective approach because the researcher could interpret and understand the whole story which is about human greediness as portrayed by Pakhom. The result of the research showed that (1) the human greediness that happened to Pakhom has strongly related to the addiction with wealth and dissatisfaction, (2) the cause of Pakhom’s greediness is triggered by sociological drive who are Pakhom’s wife, the devil and the circumstances, (3) the effects of Pakhom’s greediness revealed into two which are Pakhom’s realization and the death of Pakhom.
