Abstract

The objective of this research is to know the aspects that students consider to give peer feedback when there is no rubric and to know how the students can perceive the existence of rubric in giving peer feedback. Method of the study was used in this research is a qualitative method. Participants of this research are 30 students at the second-semester in the academic year 2017-2018 in non-English Language Education Department of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang who have experiences in giving peer feedback without any guidance or scoring rubric. The participants consist of 10 males and 20 females. The participants are in the same age that the average is 20 years old. The technique used in this research is survey technique. Questionnaire, interview guideline, and the students’ work are the instruments for this research. The result of this current research indicates that most of the students pay more attention to the mechanics, spelling, diction, capitalization and less to the content and organization. It is found that most of the students answer local aspects than the global aspect. In the other words, this current research indicates that most of the students are only aware of the surface error when giving the feedback to their peers and still unable to locate more errors accurately. Moreover, all of the students said that a rubric is a useful tool that can lead them to give more accurate and objective feedback. Meanwhile, the unique phenomenon in this research is that the students said that the rubric is useful but they do not want to use the rubric in the next peer-feedback activity. For that condition, the students give a reason that the rubric contains very long information and it is complicated that can waste the students’ time.
