Abstract
This research aimed to find out whether inductive approach could improve students’ achievement in teaching simple past tense or not. The research design of this study was quantitative. Quasi-experimental research with pre-test and post-test design was employed in this study. The population of this research was second-grade of junior high school students in SMP Negeri 1 Kampak. The pre-test was given to all classes of second-grade students before the treatment in order to know which classes had similar ability. Two classes which had similar ability were chosen as the sample of this research. They were D class as the experimental group and E class as the control group. The experimental group was taught by using inductive approach. While the control group was taught by using deductive approach. After applying the treatment, the post-test was given to both of group. In this research, a software namely Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) especially independent sample t-test was used to identify the significant difference of post-test mean score between the experimental and control group. The result of this study showed that the post test score in the experimental group was higher than the control group. It was 79.00 for the experimental group and 70.83 for the control group.
