Abstract

Background : Sinamaldehid contained in cinnamon oil can inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus. Therefore, it can be made as an antibacterial agent in the dosage form of soap. In this study also added cocamidopropyl betaine as surfactants with various levels. Cocamidopropyl betaine as secondary surfactant to reduce the irritating effect arising from sodium lauryl sufate and can also affect the physical characteristics of the preparation of soap. Purposes This study to determine the effect of cocamidopropyl betaine levels at 6%, 7%, and 8% in to the physical characteristics of liquid soaps with 3,5% cinnamon essential oils and to determine the antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. Method: Cocamidopropyl betaine formulated into soap in three formulas, FI (6%), FII (7%), and FIII (8%) with cinnamon essential oil content of 3,5% in each formula. Physical test includes organoleptic characteristics, pH, viscosity, foam stability, and the density. Antibacterial activity test tested by disc diffusion method. Results and Conclusions: The preparation of liquid soap content with 3,5% cinnamon essential oil possess antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. Organoleptic test for the formula I (6%), II (7%) and III (8%) shows the results of a yellowish white color, characteristic smell, and a homogeneous liquid form. The test result found significant differences for pH, viscosity, foam stability, and the density. But it does not have a significant difference in antibacterial activity. Based on the physical characteristics of pH, viscosity, density and foam stability of the cinnamon essential oil soap foam dosage of cinnamon ( ) get the formula I (6%) that provide optimal results.
