Abstract

Due to being a phenomenal polemic, Ahok’s blasphemy on Al-Maidah verse 51 lays as the background for this research. This phenomenon has caught the interest of many netizens and ulama, followed by other polemics such as the disbandment of Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia by the Minister of Political, Legal and Security Affairs and political issues regarding the surveillance of potential radical groups that may harm society. Most of these concerns are hugely prompted by broadcast, print, and online media that own no license or which news are induced with SARA elements. Da’i as people’s agent of change then offers what they know and thus their solutions regarding such issues through da’wah. The da’wah is meant to obtain the congregations’ reception. According to Jensen (1999), the study of reception is a novel perspective in communication theory’s discourse and social aspects. It regards the process of a message’s reception that begins with decoding; the complete opposite of encoding. Decoding is the translation or interpretation of physical messages into meaning by the recipients (Morissan, 2013: 21). In this analysis, the decoding-encoding process is divided into 3 positions, namely 1) Dominant Hegemony, 2) Negotiation, and 3) Opposition. By means of descriptive qualitative research and fundamentals of the study of reception, the data is obtained through: 1) Observation, 2) Interview, and 3) Documentation. It is then analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model of data analysis. There are 3 core components of this model, namely: 1) Data reduction, 2) Data Presentation, and 3) Drawing Conclusion/Verification. From this study, it is found that the female congregations of Abu Dzar Al-Ghifari Malang mosque show a few different position of interpretation, which is concluded as follows: 1 Informant 2, informant 3, informant 4, informant 6, informant 7 and informant 8 fall into Dominant Hegemony position. This conclusion is drawn upon their responses to questions from indicator 1 (insight) to indicator 5 (apprehension). It is further strengthened by their responses on observation indication (their opinion regarding the siyasatud da’wah). 2 The result shows that informant 1 is in the Negotiation position. 3 The data distribution shows that informant 5 is on the Opposition. This means that informant 5 is very apathetic towards siyasatud da’wah, especially on the topic of Islamic politics.
