Abstract

Social media lately became a new media phenomenon favored by the people of Indonesia, not least political figures. The use of social media is good and appropriate to become the initial basis for political figures to embrace the community from various groups to gain support and sympathy community. In this research, researchers interested to see the phenomenon of political figure Basuki Tjahaja Purnama in social media Instagram which has 3 million followers (followers). Basuki Tjahaja Purnama is a political figure who has a lot of conversation about pros and cons in society. This study aims to determine how the meaning of the audience or audience about media messages contained in photo uploads on Instagram Basuki Tjahaja Purnama account. The audience here consists of two kinds of active audience and passive audience. This research uses the Theory of Reception according to Stuart Hall, which mengintrepretasi audiences into three positions meaning Dominant (hegemonic) Reading, Negotiated Reading, and Oppositional Reading. While this research include the type of research Qualitatif Descriptive-Interpretatif. By using 6 people research subject determined on the basis of the characteristics that have been determined. The data obtained is through technique. Then performed data analysis by interpreting meaning that has been given by research subject. The results of this research indicate that the research subjects have different responses in accordance with the background. The research included three groups of research belonging to the dominant group (hegemonic), two categories of research belonging to the category of negotiating, and only one subject falling into the category of opposition readings.
