Abstract

This research discusses about the domestic political dynamics of Pakistan after the 1999 military coup by Pervez Musharraf to overthrow Nawaz Sharif’s prime minister. When Musharraf served as Pakistan Chief of Army Staff, in 2001-2007 and in 2007-2008 was a series events affecting civil-military relations in Pakistan at that time. The concept used in this study is the civil-military relationship by Morris Janowitz and Samuel P. Huntington. Janowitz divides into five types of civil-military relations, while Huntington views about civil-military relations in two forms, that is objective civilian control and subjective civilian control. The research method used is descriptive with data collection techniques through literature study, so this study aims to describe the pattern of civil-military relations that occurred at a time when Musharraf served as President of Pakistan. The results of this study is first, when Musharraf served as president and head of the military where the pattern is the authoritarian personal control, civil-military coalition, and military oligarchy. Secondly, when Musharraf dismissed his military and legitimately became a civilian president, civil-military pattern that followed was the return of civilian supremacy and military efforts to return to his professionalism.
