Abstract

This study discusses about the reasons Taiwan used Taiwan’s One China Policy to response China’s reunification during Lee Teng Hui’s reign. Under his rule, Lee Teng Hui chose to be pragmatic by opening Taiwan-China relations through SEF and ARATS. From these two bodies was a consensus agreement 1992 that Taiwan-China has the right to have it’s own interpretation of the One China Policy principle. This research used the approach of Alexander Wendt’s constructivism theory which emphasizes identity and how it influences the policy. The results of this study show that the intrinsic values of the KMT (Three people Principles) construct Taiwan identity personally as a democratic country. The foundation of identity, giving meaning to the situation that One China Policy is a threat of sovereignty. Taiwan’s interpretation of the situation is the basic reason for maintaining it’s sovereignty. It was these intrests that prompted Lee Teng Hui to put out Taiwan’s One China Policy as an affirmation that Taiwan still recognized China, and considers China is a country equal with Taiwan.
