Abstract

Communication skills are very substantial for students. It is beneficial to promote student’s memory confinement, develop self-improvement in public speaking skills by adopting others’ feedbacks, and increase students’ motivation in learning. Speaking in public is one of the most important and most difficult forms of communication. These are some contributing problems why it is important to apply the appropriate teaching strategies to prepare students with adequate skills to present themselves in public. This study was conducted in English Olympic Group of Al-Hikmah Junior High School, Surabaya. This study used qualitative research design. The subject of this study is the public speaking teacher of English Olympic group of Al-Hikmah Junior High School, Surabaya. Interviews and observations were conducted to collect the data. It aims to reveal the strategies that the teacher uses in teaching public speaking in English Olympic Group of Al-Hikmah Junior High School, Surabaya. The data analysis covers data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The results reveal that there are seven strategies used in teaching public speaking which are (1) cooperative learning, (2) creating authentic classroom environment, (3) brainstorming, (4) giving students homework, (5) providing practical role model, (6) providing clear expectations regarding the content and delivery, and (7) building intrinsic and extrinsic motivation.
