Abstract

Many students have the problems with their English language especially the vocabulary mastery because of the limited vocabulary, the students cannot communicate to others clearly. Therefore, media is very important in learning English. It can be used to increase and improve students’ ability in learning English. The aim of this research was to analyze and describe the media in teaching vocabulary used by the English teacher, the way the teacher implement media in the teaching and learning process, and the students’ response towards the media used by the teacher in teaching vocabulary at SD Muhammadiyah 08 Dau Malang. In this study, the researcher used qualitative research design to describe the phenomenon in English class. She used qualitative research design because she observed phenomenon naturally. The data of this research were collected from the class observation and interview with the English teacher. In addtion, the data were displayed in the form of narrative. The research finding showed that firstly, the media used by the teacher in teaching English were pictures, whiteboard, real things and flashcards. The pictures were used by the teacher to show the color that can improve their creativities. The whiteboard was used by the teacher to make important notes. The real things were used by the teacher to show and touch some object related to the material. Besides, the flash cards were used by the teacher to encourage and stimulate students to explore ideas, orally or in writing. Secondly, in implementing the media, the teacher used three-phase steps which included pre-teaching, whilst-teaching and post-teaching. The teacher gave instructions in a very simple and easy ways to understand for the students. However, the media needed a lot of time to prepare. The teacher must prepare the media well. It needs the teachers’ creativity to create the media by himself. Finally, the student’s response toward the use of media in teaching vocabulary was positive. It means that their knowledge, experiences and feelings in learning vocabulary with media used by the teacher. Generally, they showed open-ended/ students-initiated responses toward the teaching media by expressing their own ideas.
