Abstract
There is one general language that used by people around the world to communicate with people from different country. That language is English. The problem is there are not so many people understand and comprehend English. So that, people needed the technique to transfer English into another language in order to get the information and the knowledge from the book that written in English. Translation is the technique used by non – English speaker to transfer the meaning or the idea from English into their own language without omitted the author intendeds. Therefore, the writer conducted the research to know the English Language Education Department students’ ability in translating English descriptive text into Indonesian. The writer used descriptive qualitative research design. The research object of this research were the students of English Language Education department of Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang, 2011-2012 academic year who already took translation II. The writer used a test for the instrument. The data were the result of the test. In this study, the writer used the criteria of assessment from Machali’s book, Pedoman Bagi Penerjemah, to analyze the result. From 10 students who translated a descriptive text into Indonesian, 0 student got a perfect score (0%). Then 2 students got score above 80 (20%). 3 students got score above 75, but not more that 80 (30%), and 5 students got score below 75 but not below than 70 (50%). From the data, the highest score was 85.5 and the lowest score was 72. The average score of the translation was 76.35. It means that the students’ translation ability, according to the criteria of assessment by Machali, was very well.
