Abstract

Learning English is important. English is used in Indonesia in order to be able to communicate with other people who come from other countries. There are four skills that the English learners must be learned such as listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Among those four skills, writing is challenging because the students must pay attention to the details of writing parts, such as grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc. The aim of this study were: (1) to know the errors in using determiners made by the eighth-grade students at SMPN 8 Malang in writing descriptive text; (2) to know the most dominant error of using determiners in writing descriptive text made by the eighth-grade students of SMPN 8 Malang; and (3) to know the causes of students making errors occur in using determiners. In this study, the researcher used qualitative descriptive research design and described the data in the form of descriptive analysis about the students’ errors along with the dominant errors and causes of students’ making error. Furthermore, the researcher obtained the data through test and questionnaire. The data was analyzed by following the several steps that were familiarizing and organizing, coding and reducing, interpreting and representing, and drawing a conclusion. The result of the study showed that students made errors in using quantifiers and articles on writing descriptive text. Based on the data analysis, there were omission errors as many as 92 errors and it is dominant errors in using articles the as many as 92 errors which had the highest number from the total errors between articles and quantifiers. The second highest number of errors were misformation errors as many as 45 errors in using quantifiers from the total errors. The last were addition errors as many as 5 errors in using articles and quantifiers. Moreover, the researcher concluded that causes of students’ making errors were that students got confused in the use of quantifiers and articles due to the function of each kind of determiners. Another cause of students’ making error was that the teacher had explained the topic but their understanding were still less.
