Abstract

Social retardation is the main characteristic of individuals with Autistic Sindrome Disorder (ASD). Therefore, the improvement of social communication skills in adolescents with ASD becomes the center of attention in providing therapy or treatment. Symptoms of the autism spectrum range from low-functioning to high-functioning categories. Adolescents with High Functioning Autism (HFA) are estimated to have normal IQ although they can follow learning activities in inclusion schools with curriculum assistance and modification. However, they are still experiencing barriers such as showing inappropriate interaction and communication as well as maladaptation behavior. This research is to develop training modules from several approaches, which is self-video modeling using peer mediation that can be used to improve social communication skills and reduce inappropriate behavior. This type of research is a single case experiment with A-B-A design that intends to compare two baseline conditions, before and after intervention. Data collection technique used was Thieman and Goldstein coding criteria through behavioral observation of target’s social communication skills. The number of subjects in this study was two people accompanied by two peers. Data analysis test was descriptive statistics. There was an increase in the appropriate average value of social communication skills after the treatment given in the form of self-video modeling training using peers’ mediation.
