Abstract

Background: Brotowali stem is an interesting material to be studied due to containing terpenoid compounds which has efficacy as antidiabetic. Objective: This study aims to discover the effects of CMC- Na concentrations of 1%, 2%, and 3% on the physical quality of brotowali stem extract tablets and to determine of CMC-Na concentrate that can produce tablet with the required quality. Method: The extract was made by ultrasonic maceration method using ethanol 96% as the solvent. Furthermore, the tablet was made by using granulation method utilizing CMC-Na as the binding agent. Then, the tablet was tested on its physical quality that cover the hardness, friability and disintegration time. The data were statistically analyzed. Result and Conclusion: The result of the study indicated that the increase of CMC- Na concentrations can increased the hardness and disintegration time, but it decreased friability of the tablets. The statistical analysis result showed that there was a significant difference among the formulas in terms of the hardness and disintegration time. Meanwhile, there was no significant difference in terms of the fragility on CMC-Na concentrations of 1%, 2%, and 3%. Formula 2 with the concentration of 1 % was the optimum formula than was able to produce tablets with the required physical quality
