Abstract

As a language skill, speaking is sometimes undervalued or, in some circles, taken for granted. Whereas, the recent growth of English as an International language of communication, there is clearly a need for many students to speak and interact in a multiplicity of situations through the language. This study is aimed to know the linguistic difficulties faced by the students in learning English speaking and the ways taken by the teacher in solving the students’ linguistic difficulties in learning English speaking at MAN Sumenep. The subject of the study was six second year students and an English teacher of MAN Sumenep. They were selected by purposive technique. It was taken because they had got speaking subject in English in the first class. The data were collected by observing the English teacher when he taught speaking subject and interviewing the six students and an English teacher. They were analyzed descriptively. The finding shows that the students faced the linguistic difficulties in learning English speaking, namely pronunciation and grammar. In pronunciation, they faced difficulties in pronuncing the words and sentences, in using stress and intonation. In this case, they pronounced the certain words and sentences without paying atttention to the using stress and intonation. In addition, in grammar, they faced difficulties in constructing the grammatical sentences, parallel structure, to infinitive and preposition. The students had difficulties in grammatical patterns because they were accustomed to using Indonesian style in making sentences, and they just spoke what they wanted to say without thinking the two aspects above. However, the English teacher had some ways to solve those linguistics difficulties by : 1) giving more detail explanation, oral repetition and using some exercises. 2) giving simple explanation about the usage of structure dealing with daily life and some assigments. 3) Identifying the difficulties dealing with the students’ condition. Besides, he used the lesson plan before teaching the students.
