Abstract

This research aims to describe the critical thinking ability from the learners in solving mathematical problems in the circle material using 5 critical thinking indicators by Ennis (1993), which refers to the problem solving step based on Polya that is understanding the problem, planning the idea of solving, executing the plan, and checking the result. This research was conducted in MTs Surya Buana Malang on 5th until 7th March at class VIII-C. This research applied descriptive qualitative research type. The result of analysis indicated that critical thinking ability of class VIII-C students of MTs Surya Buana Malang is as follows: From 24 students who took the written test obtained 0 for the level of creative thinking for a number of 7 student. It means the learners were unable to meet all the indicators of critical thinking through the process of problem solving based on Polya. For the level of creative thinking 1 for a number of 5 student means that the learners only meet 2 or 3 indicators of critical thinking through two steps of problem solving based on Polya. For the level of creative thinking 2 for a number of 9 students for means that the learners only meet 4 critical thinking indicator through three step solving problem based on Polya. For level of creative thinking 3 for a number of 3 students, they can meet all the indicators of critical thinking through solving problems based on Polya.
