Abstract

This study aims to determine and analyze the students in solving mathematical problems in terms of grouping students and Polya steps, including: 1) understand the problem; 2) make a plan; 3) implement the plan, and 4) looking back. This research was conducted in SMP Raden Fatah Batu. The approach in this study used a qualitative approach with descriptive as the type of research where researchers conducted thorough examination and in-depth data on the process of students in solving mathematical problems comparative material. Determination of a research subject based on the advice of teacher and statistical calculation using the average value (mean) and standard deviation. The subject of the research showed nine students who are categorized high-ability students, medium, and low in each grouping students is class of religious, artistic, and academic. The results showed that the level of students' abilities and patterns of solving mathematical problems is different. Students in a certain class do not write things that are known and questioned. While in the other class students to write in detail starting from the known and questioned to the point of implementing the plan or calculation. Students belonging to low ability in a particular class can be a medium or high ability group if it is in another class.
