Abstract

This study aims to determine the ability of mathematical representation of learners when viewed from the cognitive style. This research is a descriptive qualitative research and conducted in class VIIIA SMP Raden Fatah Batu. The cognitive styles used in this study were: 1) Field Independent cognitive style (FI); 2) Field Mixed (FM) cognitive style and 3) Field Dependent cognitive style (FD). This study was conducted by giving Group Embedded Figure Test (GEFT) first to learners with the aim to determine the cognitive style of learners, then based on the results of GEFT test was obtained a number of 3 students with cognitive style FI, 6 students with FM cognitive style and 17 students with FD cognitive style. Subjects in this study were three learners of any cognitive style taken at random. All subjects were then given a mathematical representation test consisting of a written test to measure the representation ability of mathematical expressions and oral tests to measure the visual and verbal representation of the subject, and interviews of the research subjects to reinforce the subject's answers. The data analysis in this research is firstly by grouping the test scores of mathematical representation into three groups of cognitive style of FD, FM and FI. Once grouped, the average score of each subject mathematical representation test was obtained so that the average value of visual representation ability, mathematical and verbal expression of each cognitive style was obtained. The results in this study were the mean values of the highest visual and verbal representation ability in subjects with FI cognitive style, whereas the mean value of representation ability of mathematical expression was in subjects with FM cognitive style.
