FANI ASTUTI, DWI (2008) THE STUDENTS’ MOTIVATION IN LEARNING ENGLISH. Other thesis, University of Muhammadiyah Malang.
Language is a means to communicate with others. It means that society probably does not exist without language. By using language, people can interact and share their knowledge, feeling, emotion and build the relationship with others. English plays an important role in the globalization era. It transforms technology, science and business. Meanwhile, motivation is needed by students in learning English because by having good motivation in learning English, students will be easy to access and transfer information. Therefore, the researcher wants to investigate: (1) how students’ motivation is in learning English, (2) what factors influence the students’ motivation and (3) how the teacher motivates their students to learn English. In this study, the researcher applied descriptive qualitative design in conducting this research because the data were collected in the form of words. The data were collected from the teacher and students of SLTP Muhammadiyah 6 Dau Malang. They were collected by giving a questionnaire to the students and by interviewing the teacher. Based on the result of data analysis, it was found out that out of 48 students under investigation, nine students (18.75%) had very high motivation, 12 students (25%) had high motivation, 25 students (52.08%) had average motivation, two students (4.17%) had low motivation and no student (0%) had very low motivation in learning English. In average the students had average motivation. Meanwhile, there were two categories of the factors which influenced the students’ motivation. They were intrinsic and extrinsic motivations. The finding showed that there were 32 students (66.66%) who got the intrinsic motivation with mean score of 2.96 and 31 students (64.58%) who got the extrinsic motivation with mean score of 2.73. Then, the teacher applied some ways in giving motivation: (1) using many kinds of media (2) letting the students choose the topics, (3) working together with the students to discuss their group tasks, (4) giving punishment in order to motivate the students, (5) making a good atmosphere by moving class to the language laboratory, and (6) motivating the students to develop their English skills.
