Abstract

Some students feel that it is not easy to learn listening. listening anxiety can be happened not only from internal factors but also can come from external factors. This study aims to know the external factors of listening anxiety experienced by low achiever students of English Language Education Department at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The research design utilized a quantitative approach, employing close-ended questionnaires as the primary research instrument. The research subjects consisted of 30 students who had failed to achieve the required GPA for their thesis and were enrolled in a listening course. The questionnaire, validated through Pearson correlation analysis, utilized a Likert scale for scoring and demonstrated satisfactory reliability with a Cronbach's Alpha coefficient of 0.716. Data collection involved planning and verifying questionnaire questions, sharing the questionnaire via Google Forms, and analyzing responses using SPSS 25. Data analysis included identifying, transcribing, analyzing, and describing questionnaire results to draw conclusions regarding the external factors causing listening anxiety among low-achiever students. The result of this study shows that low achiever students of English Language Education Department at University of Muhammadiyah Malang have external factors of listening anxiety. There students behavior of repeatedly listening to the audio in an attempt to reduce time, fast-paced speech by English speakers might exceed students ability to keep up and understanding the content, the occurrence of problem preventing the audio from playing smoothly to feel that students’ time has been wasted.
