Abstract

Backgrounds: Poor sleep quality is linked to the causes of the increasing of morbidity and mortality. Poor sleep quality is most often experienced by students, especially medical students. Listening to music is one of the therapies to improve sleep quality. The kind of music that keep growing is Pop music. Objectives: To find out the effect of listening to Pop music before sleep toward sleep quality. Methods: Observational analytic with cross sectional design. The sample was 114 medical students of University of Muhammadiyah Malang, that was selected by using simple random sampling. Sleep quality was measured by PSQI. The data was analyzed by Chi-Square, then continued by logistic regression. Results and Discussion: Most of students had poor sleep quality. Among 57 students who did not listened to Pop music before sleep, there were 21% students who had good sleep quality, while among 57 students who listened to Pop music before sleep, there were 42,1% students who have good sleep quality. Chi-Square test showed a significance value (ρ) of 0.027, indicating there was a significant relationship between listening to Pop music before sleep toward sleep quality. In logistic regression test showed that the value of Odd Ratio (OR) column was 2,727, which means the independent variable has an effect toward the dependent variable by 2,727-fold. Conclusion: Listening to Pop music before sleep improves sleep quality.
