Abstract

Language is very important in communication. Through communication, everyone can build connection by interact with others. It means that a relation in society will not appear without a language. Therefore, learning language is very important because it is not only learning about the skills but also acquisition of interest, social values or social roles even change in personality. It means that learning language is not only learning about the language it self-but also learns about everything that is related with social condition. Meanwhile, learning a language need motivation because by having good motivation the students will be easy to access and transfer information. Moreover, speaking is one of language skills that were regarded as the most important use of the target language learning because the objective of learning a foreign language is to use it in real communication. The purposes of this study are to know how the students’ motivation in speaking English and the dominant motivation of Al- Mawaddah Boarding School students in speaking English. In this study, the writer applied descriptive research to identify and qualify the student’s motivation in speaking English. The data were collected from Al-Mawaddah Boarding School students’ by having some observations and giving questionnaire to the students. The population of this study was the students of Al-Mawaddah Boarding School. The writer took 34 of 97 from the total population as the sample of this study by clustering sample. Based on the result of data analysis, it was found out that out of 34 students under investigation, 33 students (97, 06%) got the motivation score 80-100. It means that they had very high motivation in speaking English. Then, 1 student (2, 94%) got the motivation score 70-79; she/he was included in high motivation. At last, there were no students got 60-69 (0%), 50-59 (0%), and 0-49 (0%). Then, the total score of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation was 3250 with mean from the whole score of this finding was 95.59 (79.66%). In Average, the students had very high motivation. Meanwhile, there were two kinds of motivation. They were intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. The finding showed that the total score of intrinsic motivation was 1677 with mean score 49. 3235 and the total score of extrinsic motivation was 1573 with mean score 46. 2647 Finally, the dominant motivation in speaking English was intrinsic motivation.
