Abstract
Background Study : Malassezia furfur is a normal flora that usually found on the human and animals skin but it can become pathogen under certain conditions. In a tropical area like Indonesia, almost 50% of its skins disease is caused by Malassezia furfur. Ketoconazole is the most common medication used for treating the skin problem caused by Malassezia furfur. However, as ketoconazole have high side effects of liver injury, an alternative antifungal medication is needed to be developed. Pineapple peel contains chemical compounds that can be used as antifungal medication, such as enzymes bromelain, alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, and tannins. This study is to fond out the effect of pineapple peel extract (Ananas comosus) toward the growth of Malassezia furfur on in vitro study. Objective : The purpose of this study is to fond out the effect of pineapple peel extract (Ananas comosus) toward the growth of Malassezia furfur on in vitro study. Methods : True experimental post test only with control group design using tube dilution test with 100%, 50%, 25%, 12,5%, 6,25%, 3,125%, 1,56%, 0,78%, 0.39%, 0% pineapple peel extract concentration. Data were analyzed using Saphiro-Wilk, One Way ANOVA, Post Hoc Tamhane and Linear Regression test. Results : The higher concentration of pineapple extract given, the lower Malassezia furfur colonies number showed. The result showed that MBC (Minimal Bactericidal Concentration) was at a concentration of 12,5%. MIC (Minimal Inhibitory Concentration) could not be observed using qualitative method due to muddiness of the extract. The data that were analyzed with One Way Anova test showed there was a significant difference among the treatment groups with a 0.000 (p<0.05) significance value. Post Hoc-Tamhane test showed significant result that started from the concentration of 0,78% with 0,010 (p<0,05) significance value. Conclusion: Pineapple peel extract (Ananas comosus) has effect to the growth of M. furfur colonies. MBC (Minimal Bactericidal Concentration) is at a concentration of 12,5%. MIC (Minimal Inhibitory Concentration) could not be observed using qualitative method due to muddiness of the extract.
