## Abstract

The result of the interview with third grade teacher of SDN 1 Wonocoyo, Kabupaten Trenggalek, showed that the students had difficulties in solving the math story problem. Students have not been able to analyze the story, so can not change the story into a mathematical sentence. In relation to problem solving in the matter of story, Polya (2004: 5-6) suggested four problem-solving steps, namely 1.) Understanding the problem, that is understanding the problem. 2.) Devising a plan, is planning the settlement. 3.) Carrying out the plan, is implement the plan. 4.) Looking back, is checking the process and results. This study aims to determine the ability of students in solving the problem of mathematical stories based on Polya theory. This research uses qualitative approach with descriptive research type. The ability of students to solve the math story problems seen from the results of student tests supported by the results of observations, student questionnaires and interviews with classroom teachers. The subjects of this study are the students of grade 3 SDN 1 Wonocoyo Trenggalek Regency in the academic year 2016-2017, amounting to 16 students. The results showed that the students of grade 3 SDN 1 Wonocoyo Kabupaten Trenggalek academic year 2016-2017 have not been able to solve the problem of mathematics story according to the stage of solving Polya problem. This can be seen from the analysis of the work of mathematics story. From the result of the student answer sheet it is known that all 3rd graders have not been able to go through the stages of understanding the problem, planning the completion and reviewing the process and the result that has been done. Students are only able to solve the math story problem at the stage of implementing the plan.
