Abstract

This study aims to determine the existing phenotypic diversity of the West Nusa Tenggara(NTB) Civet based on the sub-population and to know the kinship relationship between the sub-populations of Lombok, Sumbawa and Bima of NTB region. This study was conducted for nine months from February to September 2017. The number of samples of civet were 13 of male and of 15 female. Characteristics of morphology studied were qualitative and quantitative. Qualitative trait consists of hair color and quantitative traits consisting of weight, head length, head width, head height, body length, tail length, total body length, chest circumference, front leg length, back foot length and tail circumference. Qualitative traits were analyzed using the relative frequency formula. The body size data was calculated mean value (X), standard deviation (sd), and coefficient of variance (% CV). A simple discriminant function analysis was performed through the Mahalanobis distance approach for the determination of genetic distance and phenogram tree construction. The civet of Bima sub population has a fairly far genetic distance with all sub-populations. The nearest genetic distance was shown between the sub-population of Bima and Sumbawa was (4,457), then the furthest genetic distance was shown between the Sumbawa sub-population and the sub-population of Lombok (9,437).The hair color of NTB civet has a variation in black color (16 tails), black gray (10 tails) and brownish brown (2 tails) of 28 samples. The results of the morphometric measurements of the Civet body between sub-populations showed that the highest coefficient of variance was Bima sub-population (39.55%), follow by sub-population Sumbawa (23.00%) and Lombok sub-population of had the lowest coefficient of variance (9.28%). Based on the results of canonical structure analysis, the body sizethat was get used as a group differentiator were consist of weight (0.948%), head width (0.507) on canonical 2, and head height (0.922%) and chest circumference (0.224%) at canonical 1. The determination of genetic distance based on body size characteristics showed that the genetic distance of the two sub-populations (Bima and Sumbawa) was quite close, while the sub-population of Lombok has a far genetic distance to all sub population.
