Abstract

Putin made his statements regarding the policy of military intervention in Syria in 2015. The statements were adjusted by sending a number of warships under a single command and also military forces to Syria. The military intervention was aimed to defend Bashar al-Assad regime in Syria. Russia sent weapons and military necessities for the implementation of the intervention. This policy were purposed to put Russia straight into the conflicts in Syria. Russia is trying to get major roles and important positions in Syria. Russia’s involvement in the conflict of Syria is one of Putin’s effort to gain power for Russia in the Middle East, especially Syria. This research was conducted using explanative method with qualitative analysis technique. The focus of this research is Putin’s rationality to set policy of military intervention in Syria’s conflict. The writer use rational choice as the theoretical approachment. The scope of this research focuses upon the reason behind Putin’s decisions regarding his military intervention in Syria. The research findings are that Putin’s decisions to set the policy of military intervention was motivated by the profit and loss factors for Russia. The decision to intervene in Syria was also influenced by Putin’s personal thoughts. The policy of military intervention will take Russia as a dominant and influential country in the Middle East and will expand the aspect of cooperations with another countries and will also keep Russia’s position in Tartus and Khmeimim, Syria.
