Literature is a human’s experience. People usually have many ways to express their feeling imagination, creation, and communication. One way to record human’s experiences in life is by reading the work of literature. That is the reason why the writer analyzes literature especially novel. It is focused on divorce as the topic of thesis because in fact, people often find the cases about the divorce in their daily life. Through this research, the writer wants to know the causes and the effects of divorce of the main characters in Marcia Evanick’s novel “Hand in Hand”. The writer also wants to know lessons that the author gives to the readers. The purpose of this study is to analyze and to describe the causes of Annie Burton’s divorce and the effects of Annie Buton’s divorce on her children. The steps of collecting the data of this study are reading and understanding the content of the novel, identifying the causes and the effects of Annie Burton’s divorce on her children and making conclusion based on the result of the data related to the problem. This study used the descriptive qualitative research design because there was no treatment as in experimental research. The data were carefully examined for the intention of this study was to analyze the novel descriptively with the emphasis on Annie Burton’s divorce on Marcia Evanick’s novel “Hand in Hand” The result of this study showed that the causes of Annie Burton’s divorce were: Sam was a workaholic, Sam controlled Annie too much, Sam hesitated over Annie’s ability in having a job and taking care of their children, and Sam was jealous of Annie. The effects of Annie Burton’s divorce on their children were: her son (Tyler) had a behavioral problem in that he became rebellious boy and he also can’t respect his father. Besides, he had emotional problems so that he was disappointed with his father and became angry with him.
