Abstract

As a non-native English speaking country, in its education system Indonesia obligates students to learn English. Speaking is one of the most important skills to have because someone considers that you are fluent and able to use English is by seeing from our speaking ability. One of the most common matters in teaching speaking as a second language is that sometimes students less active and engaged in the classroom activities. However, based on 2013 curriculum, learning process should be more student-centered. Discussion is one of the ways to enhance students’ active participation. The purpose of this study are to know the kinds of cooperative learning that are used by lecturer in teaching speaking at fourth semester and the practices of cooperative learning that show effective results in teaching speaking at fourth semester. This research applies qualitative design. The subjects of this research are speaking lecturers at fourth semester of University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The technique that is used in this study is observation and the instruments are observation’s note and interview. The results of the study show that group investigation, co-op co-op and jigsaw II are the kinds of cooperative learning that are used by lecturer in teaching speaking at fourth semester. Regarding to the practices of cooperative learning that show effective results in teaching speaking at fourth semester, the lecturers have different perspectives. One lecturer believes that co-op co-op is the best. Another lecturer prefers cooperative learning with real life conversation based. Another lecturer prefers Jigsaw. The other lecturers say that it depends on the level of students’ proficiency.
