Abstract

Translation and idiom are very important to learn by people in order to increase the ability in mastering English Language. In addition, idiom becomes a challenge by translators in translation process. In fact, the translator has to know the best way to face up those idioms in translation process. Therefore, all the translators need the kind of translation strategy to cope with the problem in translating idiom. Indeed, the researcher uses four translation strategies in this study that are suggested by Baker (1992). Those are: Translation by similar meaning and similar form, translation by similar meaning but dissimilar form, translation by paraphrasing, and translation by omission. This study aimed at identifying the meaning and the translation strategy found in The Rainbow Troops novel by Andrea Hirata. In addition, the study also focused on the most commonly used strategy. This study employs qualitative research. The data are collected by reading a novel both the Indonesian and English version, highlighting the sentence that indicated idioms, putting the data into the table, count all the idioms that have found in that novel, and then discussed the data in a comprehensive explanation. The result of this study showed that there are many idioms found in The Rainbow Troops novel by Andrea Hirataa in Chapter One. Those idioms were divided into four translation strategy, namely similar meaning and similar form, similar meaning but dissimilar form, and paraphrasing. Unfortunately, translation by omission was not found in Capter One of The Rainbow Troops novel by Andrea Hirata. Finally, the most translation strategy was similar meaning but dissimilar form strategy.
