Abstract

Being in a social life means having interaction with others. To simplify interaction among people, language is required as a communication medium in uniting people. In everyday language, phrasemes, or well-known as idiomatic expressions, are commonly used. Indeed, to understand phrasemes well, they should be learned as a whole. Therefore, that is one interesting issue to study about. In this study, there are three research problems. The researcher aims to expose the phrasemes, to find out the meanings of the phrasemes, and to analyze the typologies of the phrasemes found in The Little Prince novel. Descriptive qualitative design is employed in this study. Therefore, the researcher herself is the main instrument of the research. In addition, the object of the study is the aforementioned novel, The Little Prince novel which is the English version of Le Petit Prince novel written by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. In order to analyze the data collection, there are some steps employed; they were: gathering all the phrasemes collected from the novel, identifying the meanings of the phrasemes, classifying the typologies of the phrasemes, giving further explanations based on the data findings, and drawing a conclusion. The result of the study shows that phrasemes were found through the whole novel along with the figurative meanings. Both the typologies of phrasemes, encoding and decoding, exist in The Little Prince novel with the encoding one dominantly used. Some of encoding phrasemes found in the novel namely gave up, all over, broke down, fell asleep, run out, cried out, get rid of, put off, catch up, and pointed out can be understood in one try that they were classified into the encoding phrasemes. In contrast, the phrasemes under pain of death, out of sheer spite, and call upon are all categorized as the decoding phrasemes which the figurative meaning cannot simply be predicted.
