Abstract

Translating song lyrics that contained aesthetical characteristics has typical challenges. The translator not only transferring the idea of the song, but also has to maintain the beauty of the song as well. However, the choice of how to translate the song also be a challenge to the translators. Subtitling is one of the type of translation that can easily found. Hence, this research interested in conducting an analysis on the song translation of the soundtrack from its subtitle. This research aimed at describing the translation strategies and the translation quality in terms of accuracy and acceptability of three Disney movies soundtracks, they are ‘How Far I’ll Go’, ‘Try Everything’, and ‘For the First Time in Forever’. This research used descriptive-qualitative design. The source of data used in this research is the lyrics of the soundtracks of three Disney movies both English and Bahasa Indonesia. The lyrics were taken from the subtitles of each movie. This research also employed three raters in order to assess the quality of the translation. The data were taken from the questionnaire given to the raters. The result has revealed that there are six strategies applied in translating three selected Disney soundtracks. The strategies are phonemic translation, literal translation, metrical translation, rhymed translation, blank verse translation and interpretation. Out of the six strategies, literal translation was found as the most frequent strategies used in translating the soundtracks. As for the translation quality based on assessment that taken from the questionnaire distributed to the three raters, it was found that the translation of the soundtracks are accurate and acceptable. Therefore, it can be concluded that in translating the soundtracks of the movie, the translator tend to focus more on transferring the meaning rather than maintained the aesthetical characteristics of the song.
