Abstract

Writing in foreign language as this regard, English, is an important language skill to gain the importance of communication in this globalization era. Writing in English is a tough case for almost all foreign language learners. Indonesian learners, especially students of English Language Education in University of Muhammadiyah Malang, they feel afraid and unwilling to write in English. Due to that, students of English Language Education are experienced with writing anxiety. This research aimed at figuring out main causes of writing anxiety and the way students cope with it which occurs among students at English Language Education in University of Muhammadiyah Malang. Qualitative research design is employed in this research by using an in-depth semi-structured interview only. The subjects are fifteen from fifth semester students who take writing 3 class. Those students were taken from two classes out of ten classes. The results show that students experience writing anxiety because of seven causes those are; (1) Time limitation (2) Language difficulties (3) Fear of lecturer’s evaluation (4) Lack of ideas (5) High frequency of assignments (6) Fear of the lecturer (7) Insufficient writing. In addition, students’ strategies to cope with writing anxiety are engaging with students’ phone, keep silence and take a deep breath, peer correction, relaxing their mind, chatting, snacking, reading, and make jokes.
