Abstract

Punctuation marks are a part of writing that should be understood well by the students especially in essay writing. The use of various types of punctuation marks in essay writing showed that the students have good skill in writing. Moreover, using punctuation correctly in the essay will allow the reader to get the point of the text easily and decrease misunderstanding. However, some students consider punctuation marks as a part of writing which does not influence their writings. This research focused on analyzing the punctuation errors conducted by the fifth semester students’ of English Language Education Departement. The purposes of this study were (1) to identify the types of punctuation error made by the fifth semester students of English Departement at University of Muhammadiyah Malang in writing an essay; and (2) to discover the common punctuation error made by the fifth semester students of English Department at University of Muhammadiyah Malang in writing an essay. This research applied qualitative method. To get the data, the researcher used secondary data as the instrument. The object was the essay writing tasks made by the fifth semester students. The errors were collected, analyzed, and classified based on Surface Strategy Taxonomy. There were omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. Furthermore, the findings showed that the most common errors made were omission (15 times). Then, it is followed by misformation (8 times) and addition (3 times). The fewest error is misordering which only made once.
