Abstract

This research discusses a combination topic in both social media in the form of Instagram and linguistic especially in abbreviation. Instagram is needed as the best way to provide communication and information to the users. It aims to link users all over the world through Direct Message (DM), but the main popular feature provided by Instagram is posting picture and video. This research defines Abbreviations on Instagram Verbal Expression Used by Students of Morpho-Syntax Class. It intends to gain the abbreviation words, original words, and the types of abbreviation words used by students who took Morpho- Syntax in R.L. class. This present research employes descriptive qualitative design to draw data about abbreviation words. Sample and population also applied; the population was all students of English Language and Education Department who took Morpho-Syntax in R.L. class. Meanwhile, 16 accounts were selected as the sample; they are students who uploaded pictures on Instagram by using #morphosyntaxumm hashtag. After analysing the data, 133 words were gained which the 48 words are the same. Overall, the total kinds of abbreviation which were analysed are 85 words with 8 types; acronym, clipped compound, clipping, hypocoristic, initialism, shortening, contraction, and blend. Meanwhile, there were only 4 types which were found in this research, among others initialism (59 words), acronym (7 words), and contraction (8). 1 type belongs to uncategorized (11 words), because it does not include to the types stated by 4 experts as guide in this research.
