Abstract

Writing activity is still a predicament for most Indonesian students. Students often face some difficulties in writing in a good form of English. The generating and organizing ideas are tough feat for students in writing. There is variety of feedback that can be implemented by teacher to student’ writing. Some give in oral feedback, some in written and some combine the two. The corrective feedback can be an effective way to minimize or improve the mistakes. This research is aimed to determine the types of written corrective feedback used by lecturer and students’ responses toward written corrective feedback on students’ writing task at fifth-semester in English Language Education Department at University Muhammadiyah Malang. This research was using qualitative by using an in-depth semi-structured interview only. The participants are eight students from fifth semester year 2015/2016.Those students were chosen from one class out of ten classes. The result of data analysis revealed that the lecturer mostly used direct feedback instead of indirect written corrective feedback. The students showed positive responses when the lecturer implemented direct written corrective feedback and negative responses were showed by students when the lecturer used indirect feedback. In addition, direct written corrective feedback is effective in improving students’ writing skill.
