Abstract

This research is intended to observe the technique used in teaching English reading to the second year students at SLTP Negeri 1 Maron Probolinggo. English is the international language spoken by people in many countries and it is also important in the economic, scientific, education and political world. In education, English includes four basic skills they are reading, listening, writing and speaking. Every teacher must have good techniques in teaching English. Technique is implementation that actually takes place in a classroom. It is particular trick, stratagem or contrivance used to accomplish an immediate objective. Therefore, in teaching English reading the teacher must have a good and appropriate technique, because the technique used by the teacher is one of the factors that may determine the success of instruction and also make students perform better in learning activities. This study used a descriptive qualitative research design. The population of this study was the second year students and the English teacher at SLTP Negeri 1 Maron Probolinggo. The instruments used to collect the data were interview and observation. The interview was given to the teacher. It aimed to know the technique used by the teacher. The observation was done by the researcher in observing at the teaching and learning activities. After collecting data, the researcher analyzed the data based on the result of interview and observation, classified the data based on the characteristics of the techniques used in teaching English reading, and then made the conclusion based on the result of data analysis. The results of this study showed that the techniques used in teaching English reading were Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA), Question only Strategy, and Integrating Approaches. The stages in teaching reading were pre reading activities, whilst reading activities and post reading activities. Another finding showed that the students’ response of the technique used by the teacher was good.
