Abstract

Speaking is the way to deliver messages to the listeners or audiences through communicating process. Yet, there are still many students encountering problems or difficulties in speaking English; one of the problems is anxiety. This research was carried out to investigate the students’ speaking anxiety in English Foreign Language. There were 37 students of XI IPS at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Malang who participated. This research examined the causes of anxiety and the strategy to reduce the anxiety. It employed the qualitative research design to collect the data. The data were obtained through classroom observation, open-ended questionnaire, and interview. The data were analyzed descriptively and interpreted to answer the research questions. The research revealed two findings related to the research questions. First, student’s anxiety in speaking English was derived from three main causes of anxiety, i.e. communication apprehension, fear of test, and fear of negative evaluation. Second, the teacher implemented the strategies to reduce the students’ speaking anxiety, namely tolerates the student’s mistakes when speaking English, making group, giving task, and creating supportive learning atmosphere. This finding suggests the students should enrich their knowledge in English through practicing speaking in daily life. As such, they do not feel anxious and find difficulties during speaking because they have many vocabularies.
