Abstract

This study concentrated on the difficulties of apprentices in charge at Front Office Department in a hotel during Business English II program of English Language Education Department at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. It provided two purposes. The purposes involved: (1) to identify the difficulties faced by Business English apprentices in charge at Front Office Department in a hotel, (2) to know the solutions how the Business English apprentices solved the difficulties when in charge at Front Office Department in a hotel. This study was descriptive because it was intended to describe the difficulties faced by Business English apprentices in charge at Front Office Department in a hotel and how the apprentices solved those difficulties. The participants of this study were 20 students of English Language Education Department who joined the Business English II apprenticeship program at Front Office Department in a hotel on seventh semester of academic year 2015/2016. For the instrument, the researcher used document analysis and interview guide as the tools for collecting the data. The findings revealed that the difficulties covered some categories of problems that have been faced by the apprentices when in charge at Front Office Department in a hotel. Those categories of problems involved: (1) background knowledge, (2) adaptation, (3) a limitation of essential skill, (4) speaking skill, (5) time schedule, (6) location, and (7) environment. The participants’ ways to overcome these problems were: (1) learned from seniors/employees, (2) learned to be calm and patient, (3) asked more to the trainers for help, (4) handled with gestures and tried to catch the words that have been heard, (5) bargained to the manager or the employees to go home early, (6) went to work early, and (7) dealt with the problem and realized that it was the process of apprenticeship program.
