Abstract

Speaking skill is an important aspect of language skills that students are expected to have the ability to communicate effectively during the learning activities. Therefore, speaking skill requires practice constantly because practice can achieve the skill properly. In fact, first grade students' speaking skills are still low. It can be seen from the value of 27 students. Students achieving sufficient criteria were 11 students (40.7%) and 16 students (59.3%) are still in the less criteria, so improving movement by using role play model with pictures media is needed to increase the value. This study aims to (1) describe the application of the role play using picture media at first grade in 1C class of SDN Lowokwaru 3 Malang and (2) Describe the speaking skills improvement in 1C class of SDN Lowokwaru 3 Malang applying role play using pictures as media. This type of research is classroom action research (PTK) using quantitative and qualitative approaches. Subjects in this study were first grade students in 1C class of SDN Lowokwaru 3 Malang which has 27 students consisting of 13 girls and 14 boys. The research instrumens in this study are observation, interview, documentation, and test performance. The result showed that (1) the assessment of teacher activity increased from the first cycle to the second cycle with a percentage of 73.7% to 91.2%. This shows that the role play model using picture media is available as a reference for the implementation of the learning activities. (2) the application of role play model using picture media can improve students' speaking skills. From the percentage, students who complete the first cycle were 9 students (68.75%) and then it increased in the second cycle to 25 students (87.5%).
