Abstract

The purposes of the study was to find whether writing tasks are appropriate with the criteria of writing task as suggested by Raimes in English textbook. The research design of this study was qualitative. The object was an English textbook for tenth grade of Senior High School published by the Ministry of Education and Culture. In collecting the data, the writer used several procedures: reading and understanding the material in English textbook, identifying writing tasks in English textbook, selecting the data concerning the statement of problems that will be analyzed according to writing task by Raimes, and listing writing task provided in the textbook with criteria of writing task as suggested by Raimes. Based on the research findings, it was found that there are eleven of fourteen criteria on writing tasks in the textbook appropriate with the criteria of writing tasks as suggested by Raimes. The writing tasks found in the textbook are: dictation, conversion, sentence combining, filling in the blank without translation, question answer, summary writing, scrambled paragraph, filling in the blank with translation, cloze test, free composition and writing the text based on the topic provided. The most dominan writing task as suggested by Raimes appropriate in the English textbook is question-answer. Based on the research result, the writer concludes that the writing tasks in the textbook for the tenth grade students of Senior High School are classified as good writing tasks.
