Abstract

In the academic field, writing is one of the essentials skill to be mastered, then the student needs receptive skills such as listening and reading as the important inputs to write well. As stated by Kellog (2001: p.3), writing is a main cognitive challenge because it includes a memory, language, and thinking ability. Thus, writing involves a complex process in our brain. Then, the song is one of strategy which could improve students’ skill in writing. The goal of this research is to examine whether there is correlation between students’ listening English songs and students’ writing skill. This research was done in University of Muhammadiyah Malang, used quantitative approach to analyze the data and Statistical Package of Social Science (SPSS) version 21 for MS.Word with the formula of Pearson Product Moment Correlation. The sample of this study was the 5th semester students of English Language Education Department of A class which consisted of 40 students. Questionnaire and document of students’ writing score were used as instruments in this research. The research showed that the value of correlation coefficient of product moment was 0.193 < 0.5 and the r value of significance was 0.308 > 0.05. Furthermore, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was rejected and the null hypothesis (HO) was accepted. In accordance this result, there was a very low significance correlation between listening English songs and writing skill at University of Muhammadiyah Malang.
