Abstract

Teachers have different strategies in teaching speaking to achieve instructional goal of teaching-learning process. Teacher’s strategies are important to attain the lesson objectives, which affect the teaching learning circumstances, and speaking skill is typically a sign of successful language learning. This research aimed to know: (1) kind of strategies used by ESP instructor at Economic and Developmental Studies Department of University of Muhammadiyah Malang (2) the difficulties faced by ESP instructor in implementing those strategies, and (3) how the instructor solved the problems. This research used descriptive qualitative research. The subject of this study was one ESP speaking instructor at E class of Economic and Developmental Studies Department of University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The researcher did observation and interview to collect data. The result of study showed that 1) the instructor used four strategies. Those strategies are direct instructional strategy, interactive strategy, discussion, and inquiry teaching strategy. 2) difficulties faced by ESP instructor in implementing those strategies are a) students’ lack interest; b) students’ lack of confidence to convey opinion; c) problem of pronunciation. 3) the ways the instructor solved the problems are by a) giving students task to ask their opinion related to the material; b) dividing students into pair work and asking them to present the result of their discussion one by one; c) and imitating the instructor to improve their pronunciation.
