Abstract

This study studied about the teaching method used by the English teacher in teaching English at MTs Khadijah Malang. The use of teaching method can make the students easier in understanding the material given by the teacher and pay attention to the lesson during the teaching and learning process. This study focused on the methods used by the teacher in teaching English, the problems faced by the teacher in applying those methods, and the teacher's way in solving those problems. This study used qualitative research design. The subject of this study was the English teacher of MTs Khadijah Malang. To get the data, two kinds of instruments were used : semi-strucured interview and observation checklist. Therefore, the researcher interviewed the English teacher and observed the classroom activities. The result of this study showed that the English teacher used three kinds of teaching method. Those methods were Grammar-translation Method, Direct Method, and Community Language Learning Method. In applying the methods in teaching, the teacher faced some problems. The first problem related to the students in which there are some students who intended to interrupting class activity and do not pay attention to the teacher so it made the class atmosphere not conducive. To face the kind of this students who do not pay attention to the teacher, the teacher overcame it by asking them questions related to the lesson and the one who cannot answer the teacher's question got the punishment. The second problem was the media that the teacher used in teaching English. Sometimes, the media such as LCD Projector, speaker, and laptop did not work well. It made the time for the implementation of the teaching and learning process shorter. The teacher overcame this problem by checking and preparing the media before the lesson began.
