Abstract

Drill is an old teaching technique that is still be implemented in language teaching. Many researches showed that drills were not only used in teaching speaking but also grammar. Types of drill used in teaching grammar may be different with the drill used in teaching speaking, and it may be further reference for drilling practitioners in language teaching. Therefore, this study was conducted to find out the types, steps, and reasons of drill used by the teacher of Effective English Conversation Course (EECC) in teaching grammar in December, January, February (DJF) period. In this study, the researcher used qualitative research design, which categorized on basic interpretative studies, in order to describe the types, steps, and reasons of drill used by the teacher of EECC in teaching grammar in DJF period. The subject of this study was a teacher of EECC who always used drill in teaching grammar. To get the findings, the data was gained through observation, interview, and document. It was found that three kinds of drill were used by EECC teacher in teaching grammar in DJF period, namely imitation drill, chorus, and simple substitution. The ways of the teacher taught grammar by using drill were almost the same. The teacher began the activity by explaining the sentence patterns and functions. Then, the teacher drilled the students through examples. The aim of implementing drill in teaching grammar was intended to make students brave to speak in front of their friends. As the result, the students were able to apply grammar acquired in their speaking. In brief, drill used in teaching grammar did not only study about language structural pattern its self but also learn their speaking and listening skill to the model and the prompt given. If it is used appropriately, it will be very advantageous technique applied in classroom and the types of drills used in teaching grammar were different with the drill used in teaching speaking, because grammar presentation and EECC teacher’s feedback are really concerned for teaching grammar rather than dialogs presentation and avoiding students’ error that used in speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
