Abstract

This study examined about translation shift which focused on cross-linguistic study between English and Indonesian translation version of narrative text in Surah Al-Kahf. This study aimed to investigate the kinds of shift occurring in the translator versions of narrative texts in Surah Al-Kahf and identify the dominant shift found in the translation versions of narrative texts in Surah Al-Kahf. Furthermore, this study was conducted by using qualitative research design in the term of document analysis. The instruments to collect the data was documents. In addition, Surah Al-kahf was selected as a documents which consisted of four narrative text in English and Indonesian translation version. Those narrative texts were The Dweller of The Cave, The Owners of Two Gardens, Prophet Moses and Prophet Khidr, and King Zul-Qarnain. The result showed that all of the narrative text contained all kinds of category shift, covering structure, class, unit, and intra-sytem shifts. Moreover, the investigation resulted in 339 shifts which is distributed into four parts, those were; unit shift was most dominantly used with 115 in total, intra-system shift was the second most used with 97 in total, class shift was the third most used with 49 shift in total, while the structure was the less common used in the translating process with 42 in total. Therefore, in the terms of dominance, unit shift led the changes of the rank by having 115 shifts.Moreover, the use of unit shift in translating Quran was aimed to help the translator keep the equivalency of the messages in both Englsih and Indonesian translation version and to bridges the translator to translate the text by shifting the terms’ of rank.
