Abstract

This study was conducted to analyze the types of errors on simple past tense in writing recount text used by the second grade students of SMA Panjura Malang. Furthermore, the aims of this research were to know what types of simple past tense errors and the source of the errors made by the second grade students of SMA Panjura. This study is a qualitative study. Test – by asking the students to write recount text with given topic, and interview were used as the data collection methods. The recount texts written by the students were analyzed to know what types of simple past tense error they committed. The five students who had the most errors in their writings had been interviewed to know why they made such errors. The result of this study showed that types of simple past tense errors made by the students were error of omission, error of addition, error of selection, and error of ordering. The most committed error by the students was error of selection. The students likely still did not know how to form and use proper verbs in simple past tense. Based on the interview with the five students, this study also learned that both interlingual transfer and intralingual transfer were found as the sources of the errors. Nevertheless, it was discovered that the errors caused by interlingual transfer was mostly founded in the students’ writings. The researcher suggests that the teacher should let the students to practice their writing more so they are used to it. It can also help enhancing their writing skills, too. Moreover, the teacher should let the students know what kind of error they committed in writing sentences.
